Stamps on Black History
1996
In 1940, Booker T. Washington became the first black American to be pictured on a U.S. postage stamp. Since then, many other black Americans have been so honored. There is a complete listing of those stamps illustrated at this excellent site. From Percy Lavon Julian, a scientist in the field of medical research, to the band leader Count Basie, you'll find the biographies of a number of these outstanding Americans.
