The Grand Canyon

1999
Our project is a web site about The Grand Canyon. Our team is made up of two girls from Eugene, Oregon and two girls from Mesa, Arizona. Alysha made a big web site project last year and decided to one again this year. Alysha and Rachel made a list of possible topics and decided on The Grand Canyon. They thought they would learn about a new place. They asked Mrs. Smith if she could help them find partners in Arizona because that is where the Grand Canyon is. We are penpals with a class in Mesa, so we picked two students from that class to work with us. Two of us are in fifth grade and two in fourth grade. We wanted to make a site that other kids could go to to learn about the Grand Canyon. We do research projects during the year and in Oregon we have portfolios that we put assignments in that our teacher scores with a special scoring guide. We take state tests in 5th grade and have to pass benchmarks. This project has work towards many of the benchmarks we have to meet. We learned how to do research in libraries and on the web. We showed that kids can work together over the net to make a project. First, Rachel and Alysha made a big storyboard and put down what they wanted to do. Then we emailed Callie and Courtne to see what things they could do. Each of us was responsible for certain pages. Often though we did research and found things that fit on another person's page and would give it to them. We worked together on lots of the pages. In Arizona, Callie and Courtney use share their project in student led conferences.
