Nuuanu's Model City of the Future
1999
This web site is based on a 5th/6th grade classroom project of building a model city. It reflects the process which the students went through in order to research, plan and actually build a city that they envisioned as one which would account for problems that exist in communities, not only today, but also in the future. The students investigated governmental/legal issues as well as buildings, services and land use. They did a background of reading using contemporary material on their chosen topics in city building. They interviewed experts in their fields, took notes from guest speakers and made on site evaluations of city locations. They also went on many field trips all over Oahu which gave them a background of on hand experiences relevant to city building. They were also asked to make observations and evaluate issues, ethics and trends relevant to their topics.
The 5 students creating the web site were a part of this original project. Their web site reflects a summary and analysis of the project, provides a picture of how to create a model city and explains the issues a city planner must deal with in order to plan a city that effectively serves its citizens.
