Team Collaboration
We assembled our team in November 2008 and as we were ThinkQuest first-timers, we thought that it would be interesting to embark on this adventure. When we started to brainstorm for ideas on our project, some of us contributed really good and innovative ideas and we eventually settled on the topic of F1 because we were all interested in dwelling deeper into it and at the same time, educate the audience on this relevant topic. But to craft a good educational website within a space of about 4 months coupled with other schoolwork and co-curricular activities was no joke. So we split ourselves into 3 groups to help lighten the load: IT, Content/Research and Administration. William and Jethro were IT savvy and so it was agreed that William would work on the layout and organisation of the website, while Jethro came up with the logos and other images. In the process of all these, William and Jethro also had to learn Adobe Flash CS3 from scratch. Our leader, Andrew, was an effective communicator and therefore was in charge of sending out emails to request for interviews while helping with the editing of our content. As both Ezra and Wei Jin preferred exploring the internet and soaking in information, they were tasked with the main work of research and compiling information for the website. However, many inevitable challenges were ever-present to impede our progress. For example, disagreement amongst ourselves, conflicting opinions and limited time. Nevertheless, we still managed to progress smoothly thanks to our mentor, Ms Wang, for offering a solution to the problem that was mutually agreed upon. As for the deadlines, we trained ourselves to organise and do appropriate planning so that enough time was left over for the completion of this project. After uploading our work, we discovered how much effort was put into our website and overall, we enjoyed every moment of our 4 month long ‘ThinkQuest’ and we hope that we can continue to work as a team in future projects.
Team Diversity
All of us are Singaporeans and each of us has a different niche and background, making the team very diverse in terms of characteristics. William, Andrew and Lionel are Christians while Wei Jin and Jethro are free thinkers.
All of us, except for William, spent most of our childhood in Singapore and have lived here ever since. William was given the chance to stay in Hong Kong and Beijing and has interacted with people of various nationalities in international schools.
William: Very interested in the topic of programming and robotics. Yet, he is always unhappy that he does not get enough time to develop his passion.
Andrew: Effective communicator and also loves to work. He is skilled in English.
Ezra: His love for sports saw him go down to watch the F1 night race in Singapore, he loves to collect and develop information.
Jethro: Having an interest in computers, he is always on one, exploring different programmes and software to help improve our website.
Wei Jin: A cheerful person who is always there to keep spirits up. He can always be relied upon to answer questions that we are not too sure about.
The team is ‘well-balanced’ because of certain aspects we have that include sports, language and IT. These aspects can be utilised to help present our website. For example, while we research on what happened in the events leading up to the night race, theory and convincing interpretations based on the member’s interests can be used to support it. Furthermore, the interesting but sometimes long-winded content can be presented in an attractive manner with the help of members who are dedicated to the site design. Hence, the website has combined different perspectives to analyse the F1 held in Singapore.
