Music Experiences of 11 and 12 Year Old Children Around the World

1999
Students were expected to gain new content knowledge about musical instruments from and around the world and about musical styles. In addition, they were expected to gain skills in processes. These included working in collaborative groups, finding roles that they could fill in a group, and being personally responsible for completing independent work that was crucial to the overall project. For most of these students this was their initial Internet experience. For this project they defined a topic, searched for appropriate Internet resources and evaluated the value to the overall project. The students then worked with a web site authoring program (PageMill 2.0) to create their site. They also used ClarisWorks and Photo Deluxe to edit images. It seemed important that the students write for the project and the narrative on each page was written by students. This project was of great value to the students and staff members who worked on it. None of the teachers or the students had experience in web design. Everyone learned and shared manuals and ideas. Two teams with two different topics worked in a single room on two computers next to one another. This allowed for a sort of free form problem solving.
