Team Collaboration
Each team member applied their skills and strengths to meetings and discussions in order to plan the next steps. They collaborated to design the website, implementing their agreed-upon ideas. The team members took principal responsibilities according to their strength and skills. Two of the students, Karthik and Sai who had prior basic web design experience, and they exercised this skill to deliver a clean and organized website. Karthik added animations to the quiz to enhance interactivity and appeal. Our graphic designer was able to interpret the topic in visual and artistic forms, and his renditions are displayed on the splash and home pages as well as in other pages throughout the site. Alvin, Shreya, and Alexander focused on content. To obtain first-hand input on the subject matter, an arrangement was made to visit a scientist, experienced in the field. This proved to be a wonderful and insightful experience for the team members. The group was very proactive and their contributions are evidenced in their product. The project also demonstrated how much effort is required to create a project from scratch and to see it through final implementation. An additional benefit is that the team members also realized how valuable is to communicate clearly and follow through each task.
Team Diversity
The ThinkQuest Team at Dougherty Valley High School is composed of students in the ninth and tenth grade levels. Each of the members contributed with their skills and talents to create and develop this website, following a commonly agreed concept and stepping out of convention to resolve unexpected issues. The students were interested in providing a Spanish translation to the English pages, to cover the wide audience range. This adoption reinforced the Spanish language that four of the team members are learning. The team is composed of one member of Chinese origin, four of Indian origin, and one of Filipino origin. With a generally similar socio-economic profile, the collaboration among team members was highly responsive; access to resources such as technology tools to support the project’s development was readily attainable.
