My group is working on a web site for teachers that are interested in 5th grade Social Studies. The C.A. Thayer is a sailing ship in the Hyde Street pier in San Francisco Harbor. We are trying to explain as many aspects of the ship and its programs as possible. All 5th grade classes are welcome to attend this 1 day or overnight program. But, there is a great deal of prep. work before your class sets sail on the C.A. Thayer. It doesn't really leave the harbor, but the class is so involved it seems as though it does.

The two-semester course in our Virtual Maritime Academy will take you on a voyage through ships history. We will show you ways to navigate your way through a real marine trip. Or you can take a Literature course to help you relax with some pleasant reading. Engineering will guide you through a maze of different vessels and help you understand how each is different from the other. We will bring the water ways of global trade to you. This is a place where you can learn the secrets of nautical traditions and myths. With this web page we are hoping to spark visitors interest in the fascinating world of sailing. Our site is designed to provide a relaxing and more casual learning environment. Students at the Academy can take a quiz after each Semester to test their knowledge and for those who are explorers at heart, weve provided a list of links - a sailing route around the Net. In the Logbook you will find a place to share ideas and comments with other Virtual Maritime Academy cadets. Remember, also, to let us know if youve enjoyed the seafaring by signing the Guestbook.

The wrecks of the Titanic, the Normandie, the Lusitania, the Andrea Doria, and the Empress of Ireland are explored at this web page. Its authors did a nice job exploring the history and the causes of each maritime disaster. The research, graphics, and additional links are also excellent. Some of the neatest links are found on the pages of the guest book. There are some pictures of excavations from the Lusitania added there.
