Let migratory birds perched on happiness

2009
The Jingxin Wetland, located at the border of China, Russia and Korea, is the annual stopping place for 199 kinds of migratory birds between the middle of March and beginning of April. The birds stop here for a month to recuperate before flying along the eastern coast and returning to their homeland in northern Siberia. The purpose of this research is to do the following: 1.Through various avenues, the team members learn about Hunchun Jingxin Wetland and its migratory birds, as well as the purpose of the wetland and its importance in the world. The project allows the team members to develop their skills in data collection and analysis. 2.After the team members participated in field works at Jingxin Wetland, they learned that the wetland is quickly disappearing while the sand dunes are increasing. As the result, the numbers and species of migratory birds are rapidly decreasing. This encouraged the team members to investigate the reasons that the wetlands are taken over by the sand dunes. In the process, the team members also recognize the fact that the fate of the migratory birds is crucially linked to the future of the wetland, and that slowing down the process of wetland desertification is an urgent matter. This project promotes the team members’ understanding of the environment, cultivates their analytical skill and problem-solving skill that are applicable to real life situations. 3.Through the experiment of planting wild roses in the classroom using sand from Jingxin’s sand dunes that simulates growing this plant on the actual sand dunes, the team members consider the possibility of planting the roses, the only national level protected plants in the Jingxin area, on the sand dunes. Coming up with ideas for the protection of the wetland and controlling the sand dunes enable the team members to cooperate with others, experiment with their own hands and cultivate the spirit of investigation. 4.Through reporting findings about the wetland and advocating its protection in the classroom, school and community, and submitting research results and proposals to the Department of Environmental Protection, the team members urge the government to pay attention to the seriousness of the wetland’s desertification and call for everyone in the community to act upon it and protect our homeland—Jingxin Wetlands, so the migratory birds will once again happily reside here. In this process, the team members learn to carry out their plans in real life and cultivate the ability to communicate and express themselves clearly and persuasively.
