Our website on the Civil War will encourage students
to learn more about the Civil War. We hope that
students as well as teachers will use the website
to encourage students to learn. The Website
includes such information as the people, places, and the
events and a time line of the Civil War.
Some of the people that we included on the Website
are Abe Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, U.S. Grant,
Robert E. Lee, Harriet Tubman, and John Wilkes
Booth. Some of the places that we included are
Richmond, Fort Sumter, and the Battle of
Gettysburg. This is our first internet project, we hope to improve and do much better next year. We have learned so much about the Civil War and lots of the information we did
not get to include because there was just to much information
and not enough time to get it already by the deadline.
We were only able to work on it about one hour a day.
We hope that ThinkQuest Jr. enjoys the website as well as students in the future.
About this site
1999
The purpose of this web page is to share our research and learnings regarding the Civil War, and more specifically, the Battle of Gettysburg. A good deal of our site is dedicated to the people who led others into battle and those who fought under them. We focused on the people, as it was the people our class found most interesting in their studies. We also included information on the music, poems and stories that came out of the war, since the soldiers used these to share their thoughts and fears of what they saw around them. The site also introduces its visitors to weapons of that day and the role African Americans played in the war.

The Battle is highlighted in a "clickable" timeline which detail the event of the three days of fighting. Additionally, we researched Gettysburg today: the town, monuments, museums, and interesting events. Particularly interesting is the focus on reenacting, a large part of the continuing story of Gettysburg in its place in history. We invite many to join us in adding to our site and helping it to grow.

After deciding to create a "Civil War" webpage, it was difficult to pinpoint exactly what areas to cover because of the vast amount of information available. Our team decided to concentrate on the areas that stimulated us which included exploring the various places the battles were held, learning about the diversity of people that participated in the war, and which we found most interesting, understanding the symbols and weapons that represented many different ideas depending upon where you were located at that time. We feel that our site will grab and engage the attention of others fascinated with the Civil War.

About this site

This Civil War website was created by sixth grade members of our Web Weavers after school computer club. The goal of the website was to research aspects of the American Civil War and through first person research (i.e. interview, email correspondence) as well as secondary research (newspaper articles, books and magazines and electronic encyclopedias and other websies) gather information about both the Union and the Confederacy and present that information in multimedia format. One aspect of the website was to feature local area sites to our town (Centreville, VA) such as Manassas Battlefield and the five area churches used as field hospitals during the war.
