Building a Computer 101

2009
This web site was created in cooperation with the Decatur County United Fund grant. The grant allowed the class to purchase a computer barebones kit, assemble the components, install an operating system and software, then setup and donate the completed computer back to a United Fund Agency. Students began by using writing skills to apply for the youth grant. The grant focused on student's learning a technological skill and giving back to their community. Once the grant was approved, they had the task of researching what type of computer they were going to build. From this information they began filling out purchase orders to buy the components and tools needed to assemble their cmputer. They also picked out and ordered an operating system and software. The build team met with a former student and current college student, Ben Wilkerson, for technical advice and guidance. Ben guided the students through the assembly and installation processes. The students documented the process with a video and still camera every step of the way. Students next began building their website. The website takes you through step by step their process on how to buid a computer, and includes links to their grant process. The software packages used are: Dreamweaver, Windows Movie Maker, PhotoShop Elements. This project has been a great learning experience for the students in the areas of technologically, English, public relations and community service.

We want to teach you the concepts and theories of computer science that provides the background for actual programming. With this knowledge, one can easily switch to a programming language of their choice since computer science is common to all programming languages while syntax (grammar) is not. In our particular site, we illustrate the basic elements of computer science, such as data structures, time analysis, and object-oriented programming (OOP), and for our example code, we chose the Java programming language because of its relative simplicity. For those unfamiliar with Java or even with programming in general, don't worry; we have a complete Java programming tutorial for you.

SHARE dot Com

1999
Our web site, Share.com, caters to variety of individuals ranging from those new to the Internet all the way to the intermediate users and even the people interested in online role playing. We believe life is all about experiences, and from experiencing our site we hope that a user can learn things such as how to use a FTP client, make a web page, search the web more efficiently, or conduct themselves online. For those interested in the Internet, we created a small but important section detailing the Internets history. Even more important is the section on the Confrontations server. The server itself is based on a role playing system where individuals interact with one another and learn from experience. The code we put in allows more flexibility within the world and distinguishes it from other servers based on the same engine. Really the whole point of the server is to enjoy oneself, but at the same time learn by figuring out puzzles, and helping each other succeed in a virtual world. Role playing is much like school in the way that the core of the education is in the interaction with other people, and even coping with the most annoying ones. Education is about learning useful things towards making the world around you a better place, and our objective in creating this site was providing the basics to help a person create an online identity and learn useful skills while doing so.
