This site will explore the dual faces of Mother Nature in Hawaii, both Beauty and Beast. Just as the fairy tale explores the two sides of human nature -- one dark and frightening, the other bright and loving -- so can we explore Mother Nature. Just as the fairy tale joings the two in marriage after a long journey of turmoil, learning, and understanding, so can we come to better understand our relationship with Mother Nature. "Beauty and the Beast" examines four powerful forces of nature in Hawaii -- volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes -- focusing on the disasterous consequences as well as learning lessons of hope and renewal.

This is the story of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess, and how she settled in the Kilauea Volcano. Pele is forced to leave her birthplace in Tahiti because of family conflicts and voyages north across the Pacific Ocean on a canoe with a few brothers and sisters. On each of the Hawaiian Islands, she tries to dig a deep pit to hold her fires. But she is always unsuccessful. Only after a battle in which she is killed and turned into a spirit, does she finally find a place to house her fires and her family. Pele settles on the biggest island in the chain, the island of Hawaii, in the Halemaumau crater. Pele's home is Kilauea Volcano, where she remains alive even today.

Our objective with our web site was to teach visitors about different kinds of volcanoes, how they erupt and the side effects of these eruptions. We also wanted visitors to learn about Mount St. Helens and Mount Vesuvius. To meet these objectives, we developed individual links to these categories and provided information from our research.
