Gummy Bears

2009
What can we do to keep peace in our world? Who will guide us as world citizens? What examples do we need to make or follow to be good world citizens? How do plants and animals in an ecosystem interact with one another and the non-living environment? Humans can have a major impact on ecosystems. Standard 4.1 The student will plan and conduct investigations in which a) distinctions are made among observations, conclusions, inferences, and predictions; b) hypotheses are formulated based on cause-and-effect relationships; c) variables that must be held constant in an experimental situation are defined; h) predictions are made based on data from picture graphs, bar graphs, and basic line graphs. Standard 4.5 The student will investigate and understand how plants and animals in an ecosystem interact with one another and the nonliving environment. Key concepts include influence of human activity on ecosystems. • During its life cycle, an organism’s role in the community — its niche — may change. For example, what an animal eats, what eats it, and other relationships will change. • Humans can have a major impact on ecosystems. • Habitat is the place or kind of place in which an animal or plant naturally lives. * Taken from the NNPs curriculum standards site.

Team Collaboration

Ryan R:

The Gummy Bear's topic is "What Makes a Good World Citizen?" We split to find information on the topics we chose. Miles chose Charities, Alice chose Helping Animals, Aliyah chose Community Services, Xavier chose Environmental Issues, Corbin chose Donating, and I chose Canvas vs. Paper and Plastic. We used Citations and Bibliographies to pack as much information into the project as possible.

It was really hard to pick a topic and a team name. We were just throwing ideas into the pile and narrowing the ideas down to two ideas, which were Gummy Bears and What Makes a Good World Citizen? It was a stressful time but we finally got through it.

Alice S - Editor:

Many of us in the Narrative Competition took this as an opportunity to work together as a team. We use Think Quest as a communication and online work system where we can build our understanding of technology. I also think that Think Quest benefits us by preparing us for later in life when we do everything on the computer. That is why I think this website helps me also including my teammates.

Aliyah N:

I think our hardest task was picking a topic because so many people wanted to do so many other topics and it was really frustrating. I think our team has wonderful collaboration because we always keep each other focused and always help each other out when we need helping from each other and other things like that. ThinkQuest really helps also.

Miles M:

The Gummy Bears team entered in the narrative competition. Our subject was "What Makes a Good World Citizen". We decided on what each person would do by writing a list of things that good world citizens do and then we all chose things that we would like to do. Aliyah N. and I did charity, Aliyah N. also did Community Service, Corbin H. drew pictures, Alice S. took pictures of water pollution, Xavier O. did Environmental Issues, and Ryan R. Canvas bags vs. Paper or Plastic bags.

To Figure out an idea for our team name we all gave one idea and narrowed it down until our team name became the "Gummy Bears" this was my idea.

Corbin H:

At our school we use ThinkQuest a lot. My teacher asked me and other teammates to work on this competition. Everyone has worked very hard for this team. I have drawn pictures and have written texts. I sang a song with the help of one of my teammates.

Team Diversity

Miles M:

In our group we all were different; some of us were African-American, some of us wore glasses. It happens to be that we have all moved to Newport News and go to Riverside Elementary. But many of us are from different places, for instance I am from Richmond, VA, Xavier is from Michigan, and Aliyah has moved here from Germany. Some of us have had to endure the pain of losing a friend to cancer while others did not.

Alice S:

Surprisingly, our team is not that different. We tend to agree and think similar about what we have to do. Our job is to be a team in order to work. If we were very different, we wouldn't be a team, just a group of people. After all, great minds think alike, right?

Ryan R:

Our team isn't very diverse. We didn't work on the same topic, but we worked as a team all the time.

Corbin H:

This team is not that different. We are all Americans. We like different things and that is how we gave each teammate a job. For example, Alice and I work on pictures. Somehow we ended up working together.

Aliyah N:

There is not a lot of diversity but there are differences. For example me and Ryan are so different; he has been in Virginia all of his life and I have been traveling my whole life like my dads military. We just came from Germany. Its so different that he has been here all his life. Also Xavier came from Michigian and I have never in my life been to Michigian.
