J.J.'s Adventure: A Baby Gray Whale's Rescue and Release

1998
"J. J.'s Adventure: A Baby Gray Whale's Rescue and Release" is designed primarily to: 1. Provide general background information about gray whales, including feeding, mating and reproductive habits, migratory patterns, . 2. Provide insight into the rescue, rehabilitation and release of a specific gray whale named "J.J.", which was found as a newborn near death last year and was rescued by Sea World. The details of J. J.'s rescue, the process involved in nursing her back to health, and the tasks required for preparing J.J. to be released again into the wild offer a fascinating backdrop for learning about gray whales on a personal level. 3. Offer visitors a glimpse into the often unpredictable world of marine biology and veterinary science. A one-on-one interview with J. J.'s primary keeper, Dr. Tom Reidarson, includes comments from the veterinarian on why he chose his profession and what he likes about it. For students who have often dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, this interview can be the catalyst for further study. We want to encourage students to become acquainted with whale facts through hands-on activities, games, quizzes, and using the whale resources on the Internet to solve a puzzle. We also provide children with a way to interact with the site to add comments, poetry, and art.

Whales

1999
Our project is about whales. We included information on each of the following whales: Sperm, Orca, Pilot, Bottle-nosed, Blue, Gray, Humpback, and the right. Each of the students in our group wrote about one toothed whale and one baleen whale. We included information on each whales habitat, food, and other things about that whale. We made games to help make our site more interesting and to let those who read it test their knowledge. We made it as educational as possible, but tried to make it as fun as possible. We constructed our site so that all fourth through sixth grade students would be interested in using it for research or other educational purposes. We hope that they will not only be interested in our site for school, but for entertainment as well. The people that composed this site are all from Post Falls, Idaho and our sponsor is Prairie View Elementary.

Amazing Orcas

1998
"Amazing Orcas" is an educational web site that makes learning fun; it is fun to search through, discover, and learn. Because it was made by us and we are both 4th graders we are sure other students our age will like it and learn a lot. We worked hard getting all the facts about orcas into our site. Some facts are just fun to know like, "Did you know orcas have bad breath?". Kids should enjoy reading the information and testing what they know by doing the quiz, the crossword puzzle, and other activities. Teachers could use our site in class while doing units on whales. They also can print out the activities as class worksheets to be passed out.
