CosmoNet

1999
CosmoNet is an educational site dedicated to all forms and aspects of cosmology. Its format is that of an interactive book, combining the best attributes of this time-honored publishing method with added navigational and interactive possibilities unique to the Web. CosmoNets text base provides visitors with the comfort of clear, concise, engaging prose and sequentially ordered topics to maximize the educational benefits of the site. However, CosmoNet adds an unmistakable touch of the Web with easy, user-friendly interfaces, quick references, point-and-click navigation, and of course that hallmark advantage of the Internet - interactivity. Two knowledge quizzes give personalized results and real-time statistics, the Virtual Navigator puts a new twist on cosmological knowledge, and Constellation Concentration turns an all-time favorite game into a study of the night sky. CosmoNet has a number of unique educational objectives. Designed to provide quality information to every visitor, CosmoNet spans many fields and knowledge levels. The content of CosmoNet encompasses the fields of astronomy, cosmology, theoretical physics, and even a little mathematics. CosmoNet is also set up so that a sequence of progression through the pages is provided, but not forced upon the user. This allows casual visitors to begin their visit with the fundamentals of cosmology while still permitting serious students of physics to jump ahead into the new frontier of string theory. CosmoNets extensive content lends itself to use in the classroom, where students can browse the many informational areas at their own pace, then attempt the quizzes and games.

What's Up?

1999
"What's Up?" is an entry about what's up there when we look into the night sky - constellations! This entry examines some of the mythology and facts about 10 constellations in particular. These 10 constellations, from the 88 total, were chosen by team members because they are some of the most commonly known constellations in the night sky. A small image accompanies each constellation web page, allowing the viewer to see what the shape of each constellation actually is. Besides an image, each constellation web page allows the viewer to learn about some of the mythology behind each constellation, as well as some actual facts about the constellation. The 10 constellations included in this entry are Orion, Phoenix, Virgo, Taurus, Leo, Scorpius, Aquarius, Capricornus, Hercules, and Libra. Visitors can also see the graphed results of a short survey of 6th grade students (questions about constellations). Finally, there is the opportunity to take a quiz. The web entry is a very engaging, exciting, and educational entry for studets to explore when learning about space and/or mythology.
